Dentures and partial dentures explained

Dentures and partial dentures are removable prostheses for people that have already lost most or all of their teeth. Dentures no longer need to be visually obvious, nor uncomfortable as they were in years gone by. Thanks to modern technology and materials, dentures can duplicate the natural look of teeth and gums; and they can fit comfortably with excellent stability.

Dentures can be made to look like your natural teeth, and over time with practice, will allow you to eat and speak easier. They are made and placed in your mouth after the teeth are taken out and the tissues have healed. Normal lifetime of dentures is about 5 to 10 years, but this can vary widely depending on the patient. In time, your dentures may need relining, rebasing, or replacing at Cunning Dental Group due to daily wear and changes to your gum tissues and bone as you age.

What about partials?

Removable partial dentures may be a solution to replace your missing teeth. They usually have replacement teeth fixed to a plastic base that closely matches the color of your gums. With a partial denture, a metal framework connects the teeth and the base and may attach to your natural teeth with metal clasps.

Your mouth naturally changes as you age, which can affect the fit of your denture or partial denture. Your bone ridges may shrink, making a space under the denture. If your denture needs adjusting, Cunning Dental Group does not recommend that you adjust it yourself because you can harm both the denture and your health. Make an appointment with us as soon as possible if your removable partial denture breaks, cracks, chips, or if one of the teeth becomes loose.
